Do the plastic discs sink in water?
Yes!, the plastic we use is heavier than saltwater and sinks
Are they 3D printed?
Our Coralok Discs and the Rock Anchors are NOT 3D printed. They are made by injection molding. If you purchase a 3D printed adapter through our Shapeways store, then those are 3D printed out of Laser Sintered Nylon.
Do they need to be cured?
No, none of our products need to be cured as they don't leech any hydroxyl ions like agrocrete does. The plastic and ceramic we use is inert and can be placed straight into your aquarium.
Are these safe for corals?
Yes, we have personally used all our products to grow coral and our customers have even reported better growth than with other brands. All our materials have been used successfully to grow corals and proven safe in reef aquariums.
What printer filament should I use if printing my own adapters?
There are so many different filament types that we cannot say for certain which ones will or will not work, but in general the typical ABS, PET and PLA plastics have been shown to be safe. We do not recommend liquid/resin based printed parts as these have been shown to leech certain chemicals into the water which can interfere with aquatic life.
How easy is it to cut off the bottom peg?
It's so easy, you don't even need a tool! Just unscrew it with your fingers.
What 3D printer do you recommend?
Although many brands of 3D printers will work fine, make sure they are the kind which use FDM (Fused Deposition Molding) or SLS (Selective Laser Sintering). Resin (liquid) based printers are not at this time, considered safe for aquatic life. If you are looking for a specific brand, Lulzbot is a terrific company that makes excellent hobby level printers.
